This training will address how mental health issues and conditions can impact the workplace.  Practictioners will learn how to create a supportive environment for individuals who are experiencing mental illness or crisis episodes.  We will look at how to have discussions with employees about concerns pertaining to mental wellness with respect to worker performance.  Finally, practictioners will be made aware of resources that are available for employees who need treatment for mental health issues.

Speaker: Heather Custer, LPC, obtained her Bachelor of General Studies from Radford University.  She earned her Masters of Science in Clinical Psychology from Radford University in 2005.  She has worked as a mental health clinician at New River Valley Community Services for over 13 years.  Initially she served as an Emergency Services Assessment Clinician in the Access Program.  She then worked in an outpatient program for individuals with serious mental illness who were involved in the criminal justice system for over ten years, serving as the program’s supervisor for eight of those years.  She transitioned to supervising New Life Recovery Center, NRVCS’ residential substance use disorder treatment facility, in July 2017.
